SUBJECT:
DISPOSAL OF SOLID SCINTILLATION MEDIA Recently Region I brought to our attention the use of solid scintillation media, av,ailable from Beckman Corporation under the trade names Re Ready-Filter, for counting samples in liquid scintillation counters. The media consists of urethane sillicate with a CRT phosphor.
10 CFR 20.306(a) allows for the disposal of liquid scintillation media medium without regard to its radioactivity.containing 0.05 microcuri The media noted above are used for liquid scintillation counting, therefore 10 CFR 20.306 fa) applies to them According to the manufacturer, the volume of mass required for the counting of samples is approximately 100 times less than the mass normally required in the j
use of liquid scintillation media.
Under normal use of the samples would exceed 0.05 microcuries per gram, of medium.the specific activity a low level radioactive burial site. manufacturer suggests that the sample Therefore the without regard to their radioactivity. activity requirements of 1 If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact James Smith of nty s ta f f a t FTS 492-0613.
