Examination Report On May 15 - 17, 1990 the NRC administered examinations to one Senior Reactor Operator candidate and seven Reactor Operator candidates, who had applied for licenses to operate your Reed Reactor Facility. Two of the Reactor Operator candidates failed the operating portion of their examinations. All of the other candidates passed their examination and were subsequently issued a license.
Your operator training program continues to demonstrate some weakness in the preparation of operator candidates for NRC licensing examinations. This is evident in the higher failure rates of initial (mainly freshmen) applicants at Reed, than elsewhere.
This finding was discussed with your staff. This issue is detailed in the enclosed report.
Your management committed to resolve this issue as well as some less significant weaknesses identified during the examinations, by making further improvements in the Reactor Facility's operator training program, prior to the next examination.
