Dear Mr. MacDonald:
i This letter is in response to your request for additional information (Ref. 2) on a proposed modification of the Model 200 shipping container.
GE Certification Drawing 129D4758 has been revised to provide details of both l
options (direct threading and threaded insert) for the lid engagement with the cask body.
The revised drawing is enclosed.
i The standard material of the selected threaded insert is ASTM A583. Type 303 with a passivated finish. The selected insert, KNHL 1608, has an internal thread of 1 8 UNC, Class 3B and an external thread of.1 3/8+12 UNF, Class 2A, The length is 1.0 inch. The-threaded inserts are used to provide permanent metal threads in virtually any ferrous and non. ferrous material.
The pull out strength depends on the minimum shear engagement area of the thread and the minimum ultimate shear strength of the parent material.
GE Certification Drawing 129D4758 was revised to delete the words "or equivalent".
The insert can develop the full tensile strength of the closure bolt.
This is based on the fact that the pull out strength is limited by the parent metal, the cask flange material.
