MR. FAZIO:
Is there a benefit to the NRC and the nuclear safety
(
for SMUD, the nuclear industry and the DOE to enter into a cost-sharing arrangement to develop dual purpose Fuel Storage /Trar.sportation casks?
CHAIRMAN CARR:
There is presently underway an industry effort to certify a dual purpose I
fuel storage and transportation cask; it involves the Nuclear Assurance l
Corporation, Virginia Power Company, and the Spanish agency ENRESA which is' L
responsible for waste disposal in that country. An application to the NRC for certification is expected in mid 1990.
The project might benefit from addi-t tional support from either SMUD or DOE.
1 Since dual-purpose casks must meet the same safety standards as single-purpose storage and transport casks, the safety of storing and transporting nuclear materials in dual-purpose and single-purpose casks is essentially the same.
However, the use of dual-purpose casks reduces on-site handling operations L
because there is no need to transfer the spent fuel from a storage cask to H
transport cask for shipment. This reduction in hanoling the fuel would minimize l.
the potential for worker exposure and the potential for handling accidents.
