~MR. FAZIO:
What technological advancements were made during the decommissioning of Shippingport?
CHAIRMAN CARR:
The major engineering advancement achieved as a result of the Shippingport decommissioning project was that it demonstrated that decommissioning of a fairly'large reactor could be accomplished with application of current I
technology and advanced our knowledge and experience with use of this technology.

Because the Shippingport decommissioning was not a research and development project and because current technology was adequate, development of major technological advancements were not part of the project. Documentation of decommissioning activities at Shippingport is. contained in the DOE report, DOE /SSDP/0081, " Final Project Report for the Shippingport Station Decommis-sioning Project," December 1989.
