MR. MYERS:-

Describe the process by which the NRC monitors the_high-level nuclear waste being stored on site.- What alternatives l

must be investigated should nuclear waste repository be near completion by the year 2000, which a Department of Energy directive indicates is the time when spent fuel pools nationwide will reach capacity.

CHAIRMAN CARR:

The Nucle 6r Regulatory Commission has Resident Inspectors present at every commercial nuclear power plant.

Resident Inspectors monitor all reactor licensee activities including storage of spent fuel, which will ultimately be aisposed of as high-level waste in a repository.

Should a nuclear power plant spent fuel pool reach capacity before the Depart-ment of Energy con take the spent fuel for disposal, the reactor licensee under his operating license remains responsible for its storage. Alternatives

-available to the licensee include storage of spent fuel in other facilities constructed on site outside the existing reactor spent fuel pool, i.e., storage in another pool or a dry storage installation (cask, module or vault) on site; and storage at another reactor site where. capacity is available on either an intra-utility or inter-utility basis.
