Control Room Ventilation System j

ERC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304

Dear Dr. Murley:

During a teleconference held on August 28, 1988, members of your staff requested the following information from Zion Station.

o A copy of the October 30, 1987, Zion Station Control Room Ventilation design drawing A copy of the July 26, 1984, Zion Station M-81 drawing regarding the Control Room Ventilation system An explanation of'how smoke would be purged from the l

l Control Room

(

l During a recent Region III Inspection to close the Control Room Ventilation issue, the submittal that provided this information was unable.to o

be located.

The Attachments to this letter provide a copy of the requested information.

If any additional information is required, please direct the i.

requests to this office.

Request:

Describe the method used to remove smoke from the Zion Station Main Control Room.

Answer:

In the Zion Station Fire Plan, in the section titled FIRE.

ZONE 2.0-0, MAIN CONTROL ROOM, the emergency description of-the ventilation system is described as follows:

In the event of high radiation in the outside air supply, make-up air from the Turbine Building will be supplied by charcoal unit fans.

If necessary, air is routed through HEPA and charcoal filters.

The Control Room HVAC system is protected by a smoke detector system that automatically routes smoke-filled air through charcoal-filters.

Tha following description.is suggested for the removal of smoke from the main control room:

Use portable smoke ejectors with six (6) 20' sections of flexible ducting.

Remove to Turbine Main floor elevation 642'-0", where smoke and fire gases may be directed to teh outside through window panels.

Supply ventilation must-be at least equal to portable exhaust ventilation in CFM for proper smoke removal.

Attached are the appropriate pages from the Fire Protection Plan.

Remove to Turbine Main Floor elevation 642'-0",

where smoke and ' fire gases may-be directed to the outside through window panels.

Supply ventilation must be at least equal to portable exhaust ventilation-in CFM for proper smoke removal.

WARNING:

IF MORE THAN FOUR (4) SECTIONS OF FLEX DUCTING ARE _USED, ADDITIONAL SMOKE EJECTORS MUST BE USED IN RELAY.

VI.

SPECIFIC ZONE MAZARDS/ COMBUSTIBLE LOADING o

Cable insulation, 19,636 lbs.

o Duct insulation, 1,500 lbs, o

Rubber cove base, 101 lbs.

VII.

SUGGESTED GUIDELINES FOR FIRE ATTACK /BEST EXTINGUISHMENT Portable

Halon, cog or dry chemical extinguishers are recommended for initial attack while deenergizing or securing power source.

Water may be used without restrictions;

however, care should be taken in the-application of water to minimize damage to low power electrical circuits.

VIII. DESIGN FIRE PROPAGATION CONTROL The Control Room is constructed of reinforced concrete with exposed steel supporting the roof.

Columns embedded in the east wall have one flange exposed to the zone.

Access doors are all fire-rated (although those to the Shift Engineer's Office are normally blocked open),

and vent ducts are dampered.
