RESPONSIBILITIES l
The Division of Safeguards and Transportation (SGTR) has developed and imple-mented a quality assurance inspection program of the transportation package suppliers. This program has been very successful in identifying significant i
violations and nonconformances with NRC requirements.
At the present time the Division of Industrial and Medical Nuclear Safety (IMNS) has a quality assurance inspection program for spent fuel dry storage systems. Dry cask storage systems are presently being constructed of either 1
" concrete" or " metal."
IMNS.and SGTR concur that it would be more efficient to expand the present SGTR_ program to include the quality assurance inspec-tions of " metal" dry storage systems because of their similarity to " metal" transportation casks. -The quality assurance inspection responsibility of 1
" concrete" dry storage systems will remain with INNS, although budget does not specifically cover this work.
l Resources for this effort could be made available by assignment of 1-FTE in j
FY 91, 0.5 FTE in FY 92 and 0.4 FTE in FY 93 and beyond from IMNS to SGTR and by reassignment of staff in SGTR to this effort. Additional contract 1
support from Idaho National Engineering Laboratory also will be necessary.
The expanded inspection activities would be conducted by a new section formed within the Transportation Branch.
