~ METEOROLOGICAL MONITORING INSTRUMENTATION SPECIAL REPORT SUPPLEMENT HACKGROUND On the evening of March 30,1990, it was determined that the Meteorological Information Data Acquisition System (MIDAS), which provides meteorological information to the Control Room, was out of service. Neither the Computer Maintenance Unit nor the vendor were successful in restoring the channel to operable status between April 1,1990 and April 11, 1990. On April 12,1990 the t

system was returned to its original configuration, repowered, and reloaded. The system became functional at that time and was observed for six days to verify that the equipment was performing as expected before the equipment was declared operable.

CAUSE OF MALFUNCTION No cause of the malfunction has been identified.

~

PLANS FOR RESTORING TIIE CilANNEL TO OPERAHLE STATUS The channel was declared operable on April 18,1990.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Action is being taken to evaluate upgrading MIDAS with a PC based system, replacing the present Sperry V-77 and teletype units, i
