Dear Senator Cranston:

This is in response to a recent inquiry from one of your constituents, Mr, George K. Smith, regarding the disposal of low-levt. - radioactive waste in California.

The State of Califorr.ia is th host State for the Southwest Low. Level Radioactive Waste Compact. As such, the State will accept for disposal low. level radioactive waste from other member States. At the present time, Arizona, North Dakota, and South Dakota are members of the compact with Calif ornia. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has no information to suggest that California has plans to accept low. level waste for storage or disposal from New York or any other State which is not a member of the Southwest Compact.

The California Department of Health Services is the State agency responsible for regulation of low-level radioactive waste.

information regarding the status of low level radioactive waste management in California may be directed to:
