QUESTION 3.
Would it not be helpful to have both a PWR and e BWR in the certification process, to assure that icsues are resolved in a truly generic manner?
ANSWER.
Two applications for design certification have been received by the agency and are currently under review.
These include a BWR, the General Electric Advanced Boiling Water Reactor and a PWR, the Combustion Engineering System 80+.
The review of these oesigns does help the staff to focus on issues and assess whether they are generic in nature or pertinent only to a specific type of reactor.
For issues that are generic, the staff makes a determination whether a generic resolution is feasible to cover both PWRs and BWRs or if a different method of resolution is needed for each.
