OTHER MATTERS CONSIDERED BY THE COMMITTEE o
Reculatory Imoact Survey Dr. Murley, NRR,. and Mr. Davis, Region III, briefed the Committee on the results of the regulatory impact survey of selected utilities conducted by NRC senior management groups.
These groups surveyed 13 utilities..
The senior managers of the NRC are in the process of assessing the results of the. survey to determine whether NRC should change its regulatory approach to ensure ' continued safe operation of nuclear power plants.
The committee plans to discuss this matter with the staff after the staff has
- completed - its final assessment and' taken a position on the need for changing the regulatory approach.

Containment Desian Criteria for Future Plants Mr.< Ward, Chairman of the= Containment Systems subcommittee, reported'on the joint meeting of the ACRS Subcommittees on
-Containment. Systems and Structural Engineering held on April 4, 1990. He stated.that this was the fifth meeting held so far to gather information for-use by the ACRS in its
' development of proposed containment design criteria for future plants.
The Con.mittee plans to continue its discussion of this matter during future meetings.

e-Nuclear Power Plant License Renewal The Committee heard presentations from and held discussions with representatives of ' the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, Nuclear Management and Resources Council, Northern States Power. Company, and the Yankee Atomic Electric Company

regarding the proposed rule on license renewal. The 4ommittee issued a report to the Commission on this. matter dated April 11, 1990.
o Meetina with JaDanese ReDresentatives The Committee tentatively agreed to meet with representatives of Hittachi~, Toshiba, Tokyo Electric, and Mitti to discuss issues related.to the ABWR and other items of mutual interest.

Summary of March'8-10, 1990 ACRS Meetina on SECY-90-016 The Committee discussed the appropriateness of the summary report prepared by Mr.
Kenyon regarding the Committee's deliberations and preliminary decisions related to the ELWR certification issues included in SECY-90-016.
The Committee instructed Mr. Michelson, ACRS Chairman, to call Mr. Taylor, EDO, and bring this matter to his attention.

.i plant. A Subcommittee meeting, including site visit, has been scheduled tentatively for July.24-25, 1990.

e The Committee suggested that the ACRS Subcommittees on Computers in Nuclear Power Plant Operations and on Instrumentation and control Systems hold a. joint meeting to i
discuss the.CE, GE, and Westinghouse approaches to advanced control room design.

requested by Dr. Kerr, regarding'the progress being made by H
RES in addressing the following issues included in the Severe i

Mr. Carroll proposed, and the Committee agreed, that there is no need to discuss the Proposed Rulemaking on the Emergency Response.~ Data System at a
subcommittee meeting; staff-presentation to the full Committee would be sufficient.
