The Commission

  • was briefed by representatives from the State of California Department of Health Services, U.S.
Ecology, Inc., and Roy F. Weston, Inc. on the status and progress toward the development of a low-level radioactive waste disposel facility in Southern California, which will be used by the Southwestern Compact.

o 2-Chairman Carr encour' Aged the NRC staff to consider the experience of California in evaluating the NRC's regulatory program.

He also encouraged the NRC staff to work with the-State of California and other states in resolving concerns about regulatory uncertaintios and in responding..to requests for technical assistance.

Chairman Carr thanked the participants for the briefing and.

indicated that their experiences in public communications and the pre-licensing. consultation process will be helpful to the NRC and other agreement states in licensing new LLW disposal facilities, cc:
