SUBJECT:
SufflARY OF STAFF VISIT MARCil 1-3, 1982 TO ALTERl4ATIVE SITES On March 1-3, 1982, llRC staff members visited the Yellow Creek, Murphy 11111 and Savannah River sites with respect to consideration of these alternatives to the proposed site at Oak Ridge.
The Yellow Creek fluclear Plant has been under construction near Iuka, Mississippi; however, TVA recently announced the postponement of both units indefinitely.
Inspection of this site in its present circumstances indicated that it would be an acceptable location for the CRBRP.
The Murphy 11111 site is approximately 7 miles north of Guntersville, Alabama, and is located on the eastern shore of Guntersv111e Reservoir in the Tennessee River. Although this site is presently being prepared for construction of a coal ca.sification facility, the applicant proposed that the NRC staff review it as representative of the resource area.
Inspection of the site indicated no obvious reason why it would not be acceptable for the CRBRP if the coal gasification plant is not constructed.
Although numerous nuclear facilities have been constructed at the Savannah River Plant (SRP) site, there is still plenty of room to accomodate the CRBRP. The area inspected by the staff appeared to be suitable and is probably licensable. Ilowever, because of concerns regarding Charleston seismicity, considerable effort would most likely have to be expended to validate the site at the proposed SSE and OBE design bases.
