Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Defective t[7 Welds and Power Strut Support Material (#55)
On February 11, 1982, Detroit Edison's Mr. H. A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, telephoned Mr. J. Konklin of NRC Region III to report on a problem with Defective Spot Welds and Power Strut Support Material at the Fermi 2 Site.
L. K. Comstock (a Detroit Edison-Contractor) has noted a number of problems with spot welds on " Power Strut" type PS202 support material. This material was ordered by the site electrical contractor, L. K. Comstock, from the Van Huffel Tube Corpora-tion. The problem was first noted in the field when the material separated at several of the manufacturer's spot welds. As a result of this, twelve samples of the " Power Strut" formed metal channels were sent to Detroit Testing Laboratory.
All twelve of the pieces tested exhibited spot weld failures.
Investigation is contint.ing to determine where this material is used and the action to be taken.
Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before July 9, 1982.
