Dear Mr. Longenecker:

SUBJECT:

CLINCll RIVER BREEDER REACTOR PLAlT, REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORIMTI0'l As a result of our review of your application for a construction permit for the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant, we find that we need addi-tional information in the area of flechanical Engineering. Please provide your final responses within sixty days of the receipt of this request.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, Ole clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

If you desire any discussion or clarification of the information requested, please contact R.11. Stark, Project 11anager (301) 492-9732.

Sincerely.

Enclosure CRBR (Docket No. 50-537)

Mechanical Engineering Branch, DE For SRP 3.6 Pipe Rupture Design Criteria CS 210.10 Describe the basis of " leak without break" criteria used in Section 3.6 of CRBRP-PSAR for the primary and secondary sodium loops. Since operating temperature in the hot legs are significantly higher than the cold legs and secondary loops, explain why the same pipe leakage criteria is applicable.

For SRP 3.9 - Design of Mechanical Components CS 210.11 Describe the piping startup vibration testing program, especially for the sodium loops. Since primary system pumps have experienced excessive vibrations in the FFTF tests, describe the vibration testing program and acceptance criteria for the CRBRP primary pumps.

CS 210.12 Describe the CRBR prototype scale model testing program and its correlation with the CRBR preoperational vibration testing program for assessing CRBR internals vibration motion.

In addition, describe the acceptance criteria for internals vibration tests.

CS 210.13 Many components for the CRBR plant were manufactured several years ago and have been in storage since then.

Have the components been stored in such a fashion so that the stress analysis and fatigue analysis have not been compromised?

If any analyses are affected, what procedures have been or are being taken to ensure that the appropriate analysis will be revised?

CS 210.14 The SRP states that Loading Combination Methodology shall be consistent with NUREG-0484.

Section 3.9.3 of the PSAR does not reference the transients of Appendix B of the PSAR, nor does it explicitly address the methods used for form loading combinations.
