16246 In accordance with discussions with the NRC Staff and its consultants during the February 1-5, 1982 audit, the following notes are being included in the design documents for the auxiliary building underpinning access shaft. These notes require the underpioning contractor to provide measures for protecting the access drift excavation face during any prolonged work stoppage and for dealing with localized groundwater which may be encountered during excavation.

ine subcontractor shall design and install breastboarding and related bracing to laterally support the soil at the excavation face of access drifts during periods of temporary work stoppage. Any period of more than eight hours in which excavation at the face is not to be continued shall be considered a work stoppage.
2.
The underpinning pier pits shall be carefully excavated, lagged, backpacked and braced to prevent loss of surrounding soil. Pit construction procedures to be submitted for approval of the contractor shall include the handling of perched groundwater, flowing or running ground and seepage into the pit and belling in the clay till.
