Subject:
Cross-Country Color Corporation This refers to your letter to me, same subject, received September 21, 1981. We have contacted the complainant identified in the attachment to your letter, and discussed her concerns with her.
From our review of information provided by her concerning the equipment at Cross-Country Color Corporation, and from the results of a dosimeter she were to her place of employment, we have concluded that the radioactive material at Cross-Country Color Corporation is being possessed and used safely and in accordance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules and regulations. Based on the information obtained, we found no reason to make an actual visit to Cross-Country Color Corporation.
We have communicated our findings, both orally and in writing, to the complainant.
A copy of our letter to her is enclosed.
If we can be of any further assistance in this matter, please do not hesitate to call us.
Sincerely,

Dear Ms. Kiefer:
This is in response to the concerns you expressed about yourself and co-workers receiving unnecessary radiation from a static eliminator containing radioactive material at Cross Country Color Corporation, Westville, New Jersey. Miss J. McGinness of my staff discussed your concerns with you, incluJing our evaluation that it was unlikely you were receiving significant radiation doses, and gave you several dosimeters to evaluate the radiation dose you might be receiving.
Evaluation of the dosimeters Miss McGinness gave you on October 1, 1981, which were received in this office on October 20, 1981, is as follows:
1.
The dosimeter you stated remained at home showed an exposure rate equivalent to 7 microrem per hour during the time you had it.
2.
The badge you stated you placed on the workbench in front of the static eliminator at Cross County Color Corocration showed an exposure rate of 13 microrem per hour for the time you had it.
Although the badge placed on the workbench is higher than the other badge, natural background radiation varies as much as a factor of two. Usual doses for the Eastern United States are in the range of 7-15 microrem per hour. Doses in other areas, Denver, for example, may be as high as 20 microrem per hour. These badge readings are within the variations observed from place to place due to natural causes.
In conclusion, the dose rate observed on the dosimeter at your workplace is within the variations observed from place to place from natural causes and will not produce harmful effects. This is consistant with the characteristics of the radioactive material in the static eliminator and the fact that the Commission considers the eliminator a low hazard device. These conclusions were discussed with you by telephone on October 22, 1981.
If you have any further concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me or Miss McGinness at 215-337-5252.
Sincerely, DTLCir.31 Signed B :
