Gentlemen:

This letter is intended to update our interim report, QA-1509, dated January 20, 1982, concerning incomplete hydraulic analysis of Control Rod Drive (CRD) piping.

As stated in our previous report, initial evaluation determined that valve opening hydraulic transient loads (water hammer) may cause stress and unacceptably degrade the CRD piping and suspension systems reliability. Sargent & Lundy (S&L)

Engineers were contracted to perform a reanalysis of the CRD hydraulic systems for both dynamic and hydraulic transient loads.

At present, S&L has determined that no pipe routing changes will be required however, supports will require modification to accomodate previously unanticipated; transient loads. Piping support modifications based on Preliminary loads were issued to the field for construction on February 16, 1982.

Our next report, following completion of the piping analysis with final loads, will be submitted by April 30, 1982.
