A-G.ovinn}on
Dear Mr. MacDonald:
g in response to your request for additional Information on the G.E. Model 1600 h
shipping container renewal application, the application has been revised, and new copies are enclosed.
Also enclosed as an attachment to this letter is an index listing all of the supplements referenced in Certificate of Compliance No. 9044, Rev. 8, and identifying the location of the information in the consolidated application (Item 1, Ref. 3).
The text of the consolidated application has been corrected so that the description of the container is fully consistent with the licensing drawings (item 4, Ref. 3), and a new set of IIcensing drawings is included as Attach-ment F to the appilcation.
In addition, the.t 5% dimensional tolerance statement has been removed from the application, and the tolerances have been added to the iIcensing drawings (Item 3, Ref. 3).
The operating and maintenance procedures for the Model 1600 have been included as Attachment J to the application (item 2, Ref. 3).
As these procedures, like any operating procedures, are subject to change they are submitted for demonstration purposes only and should not be referenced in the new Certificate of Compliance. There are no procedures included for acceptance tests for new Model 1600 containers as G.E. has no current plans to have any new containers built. 'Should new containers be ordered, appropriate acceptance procedures will be written and Implemented.
With respect to Conditions 7 and 8 (ltem 5, Ref. 3) Genera! Electric no longer plans to maintain the option to make wet shipments of neutron sources.
- Instead, a polyethylene liner will be used (Sections 1.0(e) and 2.0(b) of the application).
In addition, General Electric has dropped the option to permanently seal the cask cavity drain lIne (Section 1.0(b)).
Therefore, Condition 7 should be modified to read:
7.
For packaging of neutron sources the cavity drain iIne must be closed with a plug with a melting temperature of 200*F.
Neutron shielding will be provided by a polyethylene iiner.

GENERAL @ ELECTRIC Mr. C. E. Macdonald February 1, 1982 Condition 8 should remain as is.~

A check for $150.00 is enclosed.
Sincerely, dh-d G. E. Cunningham Senior Licensing Engineer attachment

2/20/69 This submittal consisted of rough drafts of several Model 1600 drawings and is no longer part of the application.
2/27/69 This submittal included two analyses for the Models 700 and 1500.
There is no reference to the Model 1600 in the submittal.
3/10/69 This submittal consisted of new engineering drawings.
These drawings have been superseded.
3/24/69 This submittal was a TELEX lIsting possible closure mechanisms for the cask cavity drain and requested an evaluation order for the various G.E. containers.
Closure mechanisms are listed in Section 1.0(b)
" Penetration" of the consolidated application.
1/20/70 This application requested approval for the 50 watt
" wet" shipment of neutron sources. VNC no longer wishes to retain this option and wishes to replace the water shielding with a polyethylene liner (Section 2.0(b) of the consolidated appl! cation).
1/29/71 This submittal was a heat analysis for the 50 watt
" wet" shipment (see above).
3/12/71 These were additional heat analyses for the " wet" shipment (see above).
7/3/73 This application requested a new fissile loading. The request was included in Section 2.0(a)(Ill) of the consolidated application.
The supporting analysis was submitted as Attachment E.
11/15/73 This application contained suggested wording for the fissile loading requested on 7/3/73. The final wording (i.e., 1 hat in the Certificate) was included in Section 2.0(w)(III) of the consolidted application.
It also clarified the use of plugs in the cask cavity (Section 1.0(b) " Penetration").
. 12/4/79 This submittal consisted of updated engineering drawings for the container along with explanations of the changes. These drawings are to be superseded by the new, simpiIfled iIcensing drawings (Attachment F to the consolidated application).
8/26/80
-This was an application for revision of the contents wording in the certificate. The final certificate wording was incorporated in Section 2.0(a) of the consolidated application.
