SUMMARY

OF GE0 TECHNICAL REVIEW HEETING A neeting was held December 22,131 in Bethesda, Maryland with representatives from Commonwealth Edison Company, Sargent & Lundy, and Danes & Moore to discuss concerns in the geotechnical engineering review of the Byron FSAR. A list of attendees is given in Enclosure 1.

The applicant presented results of trenching and horings at the Byron site made as a result of discussions at the previous neeting held December 3,1981 concerning the design basis sink hole. The trench was dug in an area of a surface depression and revealed no evidence of inclined bedding.

Instead, the trenching revealed evidence of a series of four fracture lines. The four bnrings also indicated that this depression feature was formed by solutioning along fracture-junctions rather than cavity collapse. The applicant suggested that this feature should nore correctly be called a solution basin rather than a sink hole. The applicant indicated that Illinois State Geological Survey personnel also exanined the trench and concurred in the conclusion of the method of formation. The staff agreed that this argunent and supporting data seemed reasonable but asked to get a copy of the State Survey letter as an independent opinion. The applicant also presented data from three borings in Area #11, which was identified by the staff as the main area of concern. This data agreed with the conclusion from the other borir1s and trenching. The staff expressed its concern that insufficient data exists in this area of greatest potential for problens. The staff indicated that it may require additional borings and possibly a trench in this area to confirm the conclusion presented.

The applicant also discussed the groundwater levels given in FSAR Table 2.4-28.

They indicated that the first three entries were apparently in error and shnuld be disregarded. However, the staff was not satisfied with the explanation given for eliminating this data and requested further explanation.

or additional data to confirm the groundwater levels.
