Dear Mr. Denton:
Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut's letter of January 22, 1982 requested that we provide our plans to address possible tube damage to Westinghouse Model D steam generators. Duke Power Company has Seen involved in the tube failures and degradation problems of Westinghouse Model D steam generators since October, 1981. Our McGuire Unit 1 (in commercial operation) steam generators are also affected by the problem of tube wear due to flow induced vibrations. We have been following closely Westinghouse's technical effort to identify the cause of tube wear and to design component or system modifications to correct this problem. We have proceeded cautiously with power operation at McGuire Unit 1 based on anticipated rates of tube degradation due to wear and have periodically inspected the steam generntors at McGuire looking for evidence of the onset of tube degradation. At this time, there is no evidence that tube wear has occurred at McGuire Unit 1.
Duke Power Company continues to participate with Westinghouse and the owners of the other operating Model D steam generators, in an aggressive program to resolve this problem. The results of this program (which will permit unrestricted full power operation of the Model D steam generators) will be available prior to hot functional testing at Catawba Unit 1.
Very truly yours, 4
