Dear Sir:

6 Thank you for your letter requesting additional information regar Ytg]141 the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Volume Reduction Policy Statement for Low-Level Radioactive Wastes.

The Volume Reduction Policy Statement encourages the voluntary establishment of volume reduction programs by individual licensees.

The NRC staff, therefore, is not contemplating regulatory action in this area, but is depending on individual licensees to initiate volume reduction programs which are in their best interest.

A copy of the NRC study entitled " Volume Reduction Techniques in Low-Level Radioactive Waste flanagement," NUREG/CR-2206 is enclosed for your information. This document includes descriptions and economic evaluations of advanced volume reduction techniques applicable for both fuel cycle and non_ fuel cycle waste generators.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact me or Mr. Timothy C. Johnson of my staff.

Sincerely,

~
