SUMMARY
OF COMMITMENTS, CONCLUSIONS, AND AGREEMENTS:
The goal of the symposium is to relate how characterization can be done, what site investigations should be performed, what level of detail and accuracy can be expected, and what cannot be well defined during characterization.
Discussion will be limited to those parameters that need to be characterized by an on-site program rather than those that can be characterized through studies off-site or through a literature search. All parameters discussed should be related to 10 CFR Part 61.
NRC will consider a format for the symposium similar to the Engineering Foundation format, if ORNL can locate an appropriate facility by January 15, 1982.
If such a facility can not be found, the symposium will be organized around a more traditional format.
In either case, the symposium will consist of 15-to 20- minute papers followed by discussions on the individual papers and by summary sessions.
The symposium will be no longer than 3 days.

-2'i The presenters of the papers will be from the various scientific fields _
required.to fully characterize and monitor a site.
These are:
meteorology, surface water hydrology, ground water hydrology, geology and. tectonics, geomechanics, air quality, ecology, and socio-economics.
During the summary sessions, participants will be asked to evaluate the site characterization and monitoring program as presented by the papers and discussions.
AGREEMENT:
l At the end of the meeting, notes of our discussions were drawn up, read, and agreed to by the participants. Guven Yalcintas and Maxine Dunkelman, the project managers, signed the meeting notes prior to adjournment.
