Docket Nos. 50-277 50-278 Mr. Darrell G.

Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

SUBJECT:

Schedule Relief for Nureg-0737, Item II.F.1 (5), Containment Water Level Monitor

Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

This letter requests a change in our previous commitment date for implementatior of the Nureg 0737, Item II.F.1 (5) requirement for a wide range suppression chamber level monitor that meets the design and qualification criteria of Regulatory Guide 1.97, Rev.

2.

The previous commitment (letter dated December 23, 1981, S.

L.

Daltroff to D.

G.

Eisenhut) proposed a February 19, 1982 date for completion of this modification on Peach Bottom Unit 3.

As a result of the problems we have experienced with the acquisition of qualified equipment, it is proposed that the modification be completed on Peach Bottom Unit l

3 within four weeks following receipt of the necessary equipment.

t It is expected that the new system will be installed and operational before April 30, 1982.

t l

The outage related work for this modification was completed during the Unit 3 outage in the Spring of 1981.

We have experienced a great deal of difficulty in obtaining equipment that is qualified to the NRC criteria.

In September of 1980, we contracted to purchase qualified equipment, however, our vendor (General Electric Company) was unable to find a supplier and the order was subsequently cancelled.

In April of 1981, an Ok 6 d 8202250297 820214 PDR ADOCK 0S0002/7 P

Mr. Darrell G.

Eisenhut, Director Page 2 order was placed on a revised quote from the vendor, however, they continued to have difficulty in finding a supplier.

An alternate supplier was selected, and in August the vendor promised a delivery date of November, 1981, with the qualification and testing to be completed in the first quarter of 1982.

Presently, the environmental testing is being performed, the seismic testing was completed in January, 1982, and a final data package is expected by June, 1982.

The transmitters were received in early December, however, they had to be returned to the vendor for repair (the capillary tubing was installed on the reverse ports) and recalibration.

We expect the return of these transmitters in six weeks.

It will take our construction forces four weeks to complete the installation upon receipt of these transmitters.

The modification on Peach Bottom Unit 2 is expected to be completed during the refueling outage commencing February 20, 1982 as proposed in correspondence dated September 4, 1981 (S.

L.

Daltroff to D.

G. Eisenhut).
