REVIEW 0F LICENSE AMENDMENT APPLICATION DATED DECEMBER 8,1981, DOCKET NO. 70-2938 I.
Background
By application dated December 8,1981, Mississippi Power & Light Company (MPL) requested authorization to receive, possess and test a shielded waste container having a depleted uranium plug containing 92 kilograms uranium. The shielded waste container (cask) is to be used, after reactor operations begin, to temporarily store the irradiated portions of in-core local power range monitor (LPRM) assemblies upon their removal from the reactor. The waste container is not to be used in outside transportation. The authorization is requested now to check the trolley system of the cask in the locations of intended use.
II. Radiation Safety All the depleted uranium is in the plug of the cask and is sealed in stainless steel cladding. The sides and bottom of the cask are shielded with lead. No testing of the cask will be conducted with irradiated material. The cask will be located either in one of the controlled areas, in which it is to be tested or stored in a looked area of the warehouse.
Since all the depleted uranium is sealed in stainless steel cledding, the potential for the material to becomPairhorne particulate is non-existent.
The risk for an internal exposure through inhalation mode by the worker is, therefore, unlikely. The external radiation exposure from the stainless steel clad depleted uranium is less than 2 mr/hr on contact. Accordingly, the exposure level from this sealed source is less than the external exposure level allowed in a restricted area by 10 CFR 20.
III. Conclusion and Recommendation The receipt, possession and testing of the shielded waste container will, have no adverse effect on the health and safety of the opt rating personnel, the public or the environment.
