Subject:

LaSalle County Station Units 1 an Preoperational Fog and Ice Observati Program; NRC Docket Nos. 50-373 and 50-374

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

Enclosed is a summary of the second year of preoperation fog and rime ice observations in the vicinity o f the cooling pond.

This is reported in accordance with the Final Environmental Statement, NUREG 0496; LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2.

The summary consists of:

(a) Attachment 1, which includes all incidences of fog which restricts visibility to 1/4 mile or less and rime ice observed off of station prnperty; and (b) Attachment 2, which consists of copies of the four quarterly 1981 summaries of fog and rime ice observations.

In summary, there were 11 days out o f 248 observation days where visibility was restricted to less than 1/4 mile.

Addition-ally, there were two observations o f ice build-up occurring o f f to the station property.

With respect to the rime ice observation of December 29, 1981, ice formation was approximately 1/4 inch in thickness.

The formation o f ice on various vertical surfaces was irregular but was in all cases, under one inch thick.

When compared to 1980, 1981 had one more day o f fog where the visibility was restricted to 1/4 mile or less and 1981 had thc first observation of rime ice (December 29, 1981) that occurred of f the station property.

Since fuel still has not been loaded into the reactors, there has not been any significant heat rejected to the pond.
