Gentlenen:

This is to confirm the information provided to Mr. Richard Kiessel from k the Inspection and Enforcanent Office of the N.R.C. in Washington D.C.

via telephone conversation on Deconber 2, 1981.

1. The aftercooler is used to lower the gas discharge temperature of u the drywell purge empressor, and was supplied by Atlas Copco Turbonetics "

Inc. for installation in the piping system by Bechtel Corporation.

2.1 The cooler was constructed by the Lytron Inc. in Woburn, Mass.

under the contract to A.C.T. in compliance with the requirements of the Design Specification 9645-M-050.1.

2.2 This was standard Lytron cooler design, upgraded according to N.R.C. Peg. Guide 1.26 Quality "B" .

2.3 As part of Lytron's Standard I;esign Procedure, Lytron Inc. applied

.001 .002 thick teflon coating to the I.D. of the shell, to facilitate initial assembly of the tube core and prevent deposits (fran brackish cooling water) adhering to the shell I.D. during testing period. .

. V 2.4 Destruction of this teflon film during the scheduled design life time, will not effect the cooling efficiency nor the operability  :

of the cooler during IDCA condition due to insignificant amounts  !

of teflon material in relation to the size of the baffel clearances and tute spacing.

M 3.1 During the cooler shell modification, performed on two shells, out of four total, requiring inlet and discharge nozzle rein-forcement, teflon coating was renoved, authorized by Bechtel SDDR No. M-050.1-006 dated G-26-1981~. Two cooler shells, with-out teflon coating were returned to Grand Gulf site for instal-lation into the piping system.

3.2 Two renalning cooler shells should be returned to A.C.T. for canpletion of nozzle reinforcement nodifications, at this time teflon coating will be raroved in compliance with Bechtel authorization.

4.0 Four aftercoolers of this particular design are used with the purge coupressors on the Grand Gblf project only.
