Dear Mr. Davis:
Referenced letter reported " unusual markings on the lid seating surface" had been discovered during routine unloading of the 15-160B cask at Barnwell.
A thorough inspection revealed that this was not a proper description of the problem area. The 14 gauge steel trough bottom shown in the attached figure is the area inspected and subsequently replaced. This piece of sheet metal had rusted. The gaskets, lid and cask sealing surfaces were not involved.
Quality Assurance inspections after the repairs were completed verified the gaskets and seating surfaces met the required ccnditions as specified in the certificate of compliance.
We are convinced that there was no reduction in the effectiveness of the package during its use. The 15-160B shipping cask has been returned to service.
Sincerely, CHEM-NUCLEAR SYSTEMS, INC.
