Alabama Power Company has requested in letters of March 19, 1981 and June 23, 1981 that the date in 10 CFR Part 50.48, Paragraph (c)(5) for submitting design descriptions of dedicated shutdown systems, or other similar modifications, be extended to October 1, 1982 for Unit 1 and March 1, 1982 for Unit 2.
These commitment dates, as stated by our March 19, 1981 letter, were predicated upon best estimate of schedules for refueling outages.
Since the establishment of these commitment dates, unforeseen, forced outages have occurred on Units 1 & 2.These outages have resulted in a redirection of available manpower including design support.
This reallocation of resources has not allowed the completion of initially scheduled activities associated with the subject design effort.
Consequently, an exemption is requested, pursuant to 10 CFR Part 50.12, from the requirements of 10 CFR Part 50.48 to allow the extension of the date in the aforementioned letters for submitting design descriptions of alternate or dedicated shutdown systems needed to satisfy Section III.G.3 of 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix R from March 1, 1982 to June 1, 1982 for Unit 2 of the Joseph M.
Farley Nuclear Plant.
With respect to Unit 1, every effort is being made to submit the design descriptions of the dedicated shutdown y
systems, or other similiar modifications, by October 1,
