Jan. 21, 1982 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. ;20555
Dear Chairman:
I regret that I am unable to appear in person at the N.R.C.
hearings on the Indian Point Nuclear Plants.
I hope that my written statement will be given equal consideration.
The siting of the Indian Point plants, so close to major high density population centers, seems to me to have been the initial blunder, - one that should be remedied immediately by closing them down.
I stress the urgency for variuus reasons.
- 1. The operating record of the management is far from reassuring.
Breakdowns and repairs, when investigated, have revealed carelessness and at times deliberate deception of the public. The number of
" incidents" has been staggering.
- 2. The proximity to the Ramapo Fault must certainly be given profound consideration.
- 3. It seems to me that it would be wasting your time to quote all the statements of experts attesting to the fact that evacuation within a 50 mile radius would be totally impossible. This fact alone, I believe, places a heavy moral responsibility on the N.R.C. in its role as guardians of the safety of the public As a resident of a town within that 50 mile radius I wish to appeal to you and the other commissioners to have our safety uppermost in your minds at these hearings. No other consideration would justify the catastrophe in the event of an accident.
Sincerely B, s 7r) [g%
