Dear Mr. Simpson:
This is in partial response to your letter dated October 7,1981 in which you requested, pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act, copies of documents pertaining to eight enumerated companies.
In an October 23, 1981 telephone conversation with Ms. Sarah N. Wigginton of my staff, you indicated, in view of the large volume of documents which would be subject to your request, that you would limit the request to the licenses and amendments for the present. You also indicated that you might require additional documents in order to complete your research.
Please find enclosed the three documents listed on Appendix A.-
These represent the only companies on your list for which the NRC has issued licenses. We have been informed that the office involved does not maintain file summaries or chronological summaries regarding the companies covered under the respective licenses.
With regard to the background material which you have decided not to request at the present time, we have been informed that this consists chiefly of correspondence between the NRC and the companies.
Several NRC regional offices have been contacted regarding additional documents which may be subject to your request.
As soon as that search is completed, we will contact you.

Fairchild C1mera and Instrument Corp, based in Mountain View, CA; a subsidiary of Schlumberger.
National Semiconductor Corp Intel Corp Signetics all as d in Santa Clara County, CA, also known as " Silicon Valley" Advanced Micro Devices Motorola Semiconductor Corp, of Phoenix AZ Texas Instruments Corp of Dallas TX Mostek, a subsidiary of United Technologies, also based in Texas.
All are manufacturers of semiconductors, integrated circuits and microcomputer chips. I am particularly interested in the workplace and environmental impact of this manufacturing process.
