NRC-8 .

Gentlemen:

This letter constitutes a final report regarding the subject deficiency initially reported to Mr. W. F. Christianson, of the NRC, as a potentially reportable deficiency under 10CFR50.55(e).

The subject deficiency was discovered when Wyle Labs was contracted by General Electric Company (GE), to perform environmental qualification tests on Crosby Solenoid Actuated Safety Relief Valves (SRV) . Wyle Labs has reported that in some cases, at design temperatures (340 F), these solenoid actuated valves fail to operate at the minimum allowable supply voltage.

Failure of these valves could result in the loss of availability of the low pressure ECCS systems which may adversely affect the safety of operations of the plant during its expected lifetime. This condition is considered to be reportable under the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e).

To correct this situation, CG&E will replace the faulty solenoid valves with valves qualified to perform at design-basis accident conditions. Implemen- '

tation of this corrective action is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 1982.
