RE:
WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT-1
/ f 10CFR50.55(e) - ITEM M INCOMPLETE 4
HYDRAULIC ANALYSIS OF CRD PIPING - DOCKET NO. 50-358, CONSTRUCTION PERMIT CPPR-88, W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE #NRC-8 Gentlemen:
This letter constitutes an interim report to the subject deficiences originally reported to the NRC Senior Site Resident Inspector as a po-tentially reportable deficiency under 10CFR50.55(e).
The design included an inadequate review of Control Rod Drive (CRD)
Piping for valve opening hydraulic transient loads. This deficiency was originally identified by Reactor Controls Incorporated (RCI), the original CRD design engineer, in their October 14, 1981, letter to the NRC Office of Inspection and Enforcement.
Sargent & Lundy Engineers (S&L) has been contracted by CG&E to perform a reanalysis of the CRD hydraulic systems for both dynamic and hydraulic transient loads.
An initial evaluation has determined that valve opening hydraulic transient loads (water hammer) may subject the piping and suspension system to stresses which could result in the degradation of CRD system reliability.
This condition is considered to be reportable under 10CFR50.55(e).
The reanalysis by S&L has determined that no pipe routing changes will be cequired. They have, however, determined that supports will require modification to accommodate these transient loads.

We trust this letter will be found acceptable as an interim report under 10CFR50.55(e).
