Dear Secretary:
m-I understand the NRC is attempting again to permit _the use of radioactive scrap metals in the manufacture of consumer goods.
The arguments that the radioactivity is insignificant appear to me to very invalid.
We do not know the effects of low level ra-diation over long periods of time.
We do know that radiation in the body is cumulative and a "little bit" over and over again from many sources is going to add up to a significant amount in
.a period of time.
I oppose such use of radioactive metals and urge you to disallow such use.
Another matter which concerns me is the published announcement in the De.cember 31, 1981 Federal Register that the Clinch. River Breeder Reactor will be exempt from licensing requirements.
This goes against all common sense when one considers the reactor is a dangerous experimental demonstration.
It also violates the law governing safety controls over nuclear energy.
The power of NRC to protect the safety of the people should be strengthened not eroded.
I urge you to deny this exemption.
Thank you for your attention to these matters.
Yours truly h deu C L Ds2 cu?)
