Test Start of the Motor-Driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump on an Emergency Diesel Generator Attached are test reports for the manufacturers' testing conducted on the Trojan Nuclear Plant emergency diesel generators.
This information is provided for your evaluation regarding the proposed test start of the motor-driven auxiliary feedwater (AFW) pump on an emergency diesel ge ne ra tor. This should be considered as a supplement to our letter of November 12, 1981.
The enclosed test data has been extracted from the manufacturers' Quality Assurance Documentation and Test Manual for Trojan's emergency diesel generators. This data is separated into two sections, a continuous load test and a transient load test. The largest continuous load test con-sisted of loading the emergency diesel generator to 4920 kW at a 0.8 power factor up to a maximum of 4 hours4.62963e-5 days <br />0.00111 hours <br />6.613757e-6 weeks <br />1.522e-6 months <br />. The most severe tert was the sudden application of 4920 kW at a 0.8 power factor to the emergency diesel generator during the transient load test.
Please note that this test is more severe than starting of the AFW pump since the mechanical load change on the shaft of the emergency diesel generator was equivalent to 6595 hp.
Assuming full voltage, the actual kilowatt load on the emergency diesel generator during a start of the AFW pump would be approximately only 1250 kW, or 1675 hp.

O TEST REPORT INFORMATION Acceptance testing of the Trojan Nuclear Plant emergency diesel generators was conducted by Bruce GM Diesel, Inc. at Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
The attached test report was completed during the period of August 28, 1972 to September 28, 1972, and was witnessed and reviewed by D. L. Glivinski, a Portland General Electric Co. Quality Assurance representative. The test data provided is only a small portion of the entire test report; hmieve r, i t is that part which is directly applicable for comparison to au nuxiliary feedwater pump test start from an emergency diesel generator.
The provided test information is divided into two parts, a continuous load test and a transient lead test.
The continuous load test consisted of loading the emergency diesel generators to specific intervals from 25 percent to 110 percent of 4418 kW for up to 4 hours4.62963e-5 days <br />0.00111 hours <br />6.613757e-6 weeks <br />1.522e-6 months <br /> at each interval.
The transient load test entailed loading the emergency diesel generators at a capacity of 1105 kW up to a maximum of 4920 kW and then, at each specified test level, the load would be instantaneously removed and later reapplied by cycling of a breaker. For all tests, the power factor was maintained at 0.8.

hr kh TRANSIENT PER E TEST T
's During the initial adjustments for transient response, the engines bogged down when the load exceeded 258/o of rated. Investigation showed that the engine injec-tor racks in relation to the governor actuators required adjustment. The gover-nors actuators were also returned to Woodward Governor Company for bench i
testing. It was found that the centering coil required resetting Other than that, the governor actuators were properly operating.
Governor actuators on engines #2 were placed on engines til to complete the test and these then will remain on units # 1 A and IB. Initial adjustment resulted in transient response as shown on the t'wo strip charts included for reference only.
Final adjustment of the 8270-890 amplifier gain and reset potentiometers produced the results on attached strip charts for the actual transient tests. The. final positions:

LOAD TEST i
The load test was conducted to prove the load carrying ability of the engines l
per specification requirements.
The pressure and temperature reading are all normal. The engine-generator operated smoothly.
The final load run at 4920 KW
- 0. 8 PF was not run for the full four hour. period
' ~
because of an electrical failure in the Bruce GM Diesel reactor being used for the 0. 8 PF loading. The operating temperatures and pressures however stabilized during the three hour duration of the run, proving the capability of the equipment at this rating.
