The installation of containment water level monitors is required by filmEG-0737. We have installed this system at Calvert Cliffs, but after an initial period of successful operation, erroneous level indications are being received.
Consultations with the instrument manufacturer have led us to believe that the spurious indications are caused by air entrapped in the accociated capillary tubing.
Thermal expansion of this air causes extension of the remote sensing bellows; excessive extension results in the bellows
" bottoming out" in its housing.
Further air expansion produces a pressure signal at the transmitter with resultant erroneous level indication.
We plan to replace the bellows housing with one of improved design and to replace the fill fluid with a better-deaerated type. This work is currently scheduled for the upcoming refueling outages (April 1982 for l' nit 1, October 1082 for Unit 2).
