i i This letter is an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) item which was reported to Mr. W. F. Christianson, NRC Resident Inspector,

' on December 7, 1981.

CCSE was notified by General Electric letter CG&E-1545 of the potential for type liFA Relays to develop cracks within the Lexan bobbins used as

{ part of its magnetic assembly. In addition, I.E. Information Notice 81-01 ,

states the Lexan bobbin is subject to cracking with an occasional broken j

bobbin found upon inspection.

At present, GE Services Information Letter SIL No. 44, Supplement 2, calls for inspection of the Lexan bobbins at twelve (12) month intervals 1 with replacement of any found cracked or broken.

I The GE Type HFA Relays 120 vac 6011z or 125 vde, are used throughout the Zimmer Plant as control devices. Failure of these relays in safety related systems could result in the loss of contrcl function. This deficiency if not corrected could adversely af fect the safety of plant operations. Therefore, we conclude that this item is a reportable deficiency under 10CFR50.55(e).

! It is CG&E's intention to identify all safety related HFA Relays with Lexan coil bobbins. The coil bobbin on the identified relays will be replaced with a qualified replacement coil made of Tefsel or the relay will be replaced.
