HEN 3 LEY'S CEMETARY

.! TEM 0F RECORD 40RE119 In 1974 Dr. Gerald F. Schroedl of the University of Tennessee Department of Archaeology, wrote and recorded a site survey sheet on the Hensley's Cemetary and it was numbered as above. After that time the same number was assigned to another location within Roane County (The Fort Southwest Point, Kingston,Tennassee). The State Division of Archaeology opted to retain the numbering of the Fort Southwest Point and did not keep a record of Hensley's Cemeta ry. Therefore, a site survey sheet for the Hensley's Cemetary, with or without a number, is not available in the Statewide Archaeological Site File.

  • reenti:n: This site is located at river mile 17.3 on the first terrace above the river. ,-

n is bounded on the south by TVA powerlines and on the west by the river road.

Umestone outcrops extending to the rivers edge form the northern boundary (35*53'13" ~

north latitude, 84*22'24" west longitude). According to previous site survey data '

gniversity of Tennessee, Site Survey Records for Roane Coimty), a mound is located beyond the river road approximately 1000 feet from the village or camp area.

Present condition: The site is covered by pine trees (4 to 10 inches in diameter) planted in rows S to 10 foot apart with moderaia to heavy undergrowth. The site deposits are .

moderately croded alongthe river bank. w Wark conducted: Surface survey and Il test pits.

Cultural material: 1 czyptocrystallinc chipping debris from test pit No. 5.

Itecommendation: No further work is required in the area tested. The survey, however, was unable to locate the associated motmd. The area is heavily wooded, ist it is probable that the motmd would be evident on the 2 foot contour map now in

(

preparction, since it is reportedly 5 feet high and 50 feet in diameter. The mou'nd -

could also be located by removing the vegetation from the area. Location and pessible cxc2Vation of the motmd should be undertaken prior to construction.  ;

tocation: This site is situated on the first terrace of the Clinch River at river mile 15,2 (35*53'49" north latitude, 84*23'12" west Icngitude). A TVA powerline forms '

its southern boundary and a small unnamed creek approximately 800 feet downstream from the powerline forms its northern boundary. The greatest concentration of cultural material and a shell midden occur at the downstream terminus.

Present condition: Rows of planted pine trees, shrubs, and grasses cever the site.

t! cavy brush and vines occur along the river bank. (Fig. 5). The 1941 survey reported the occurrence of s shell midden creding cut of the river bank at the southern end of the site where the TVA powerline now crosses the river. The 1972 survey was unable to locate this deposit and it has probably been completely destroyed. In addition, there is evidence of bu11 dozing in this portion of the site. Most of the shell midden at the downstream end of the site also has been destroyed by erosion, but an area 150 feet long and 20 feet wide remains intact (Fig. G).

Site: 40RE121 ,

location: This site is located at the base of the south side of Chestnut Ridge cpproximately 2000 feet from the Clinch River. It is situated along a small road marked (35'54'15" as ncitha jeeplatitude, and wagon trackon 61'23'05" USGS-TVA west longitude). 7-1/2-minute Elverton j'Euadrangle Descrintion: This site consists of the remains of a house well, cellar, two small outbuildings, and three rectangular pits, all enclosed by a hand split picket fence.

A brick chimney with a single hearth, four limestonc corner supports, and two porch  ;

suppotts characteri7e the house (Fig.10). Several floor supports are lying between  :

the limestonc feundations suggesting that the structure may have been constructed with hand hewn Im:3. A shallow rectangular depression is centrally located within j the sinacture appro;,imaL:ly five feet in front of the tireplace. The well, locaicd

.i

- ..ar the south side of the house, is brick lined and filled with debris. Situated in

',,.3t of the house is a rectangular stone lined cellar with a south facing entry.

} 2cing the cellar is a rcciangular log crib (Fig.11). Four posts representing the (l

_.1ains of a small shed are located directly south of the chimucy. The rear of this br.;eture and the log crib ivrm a portion of the picket fence which encloses the area.

S .:JJition, three squarc pits of undetermined function are located along the north

,:.2 of the house. Surface material consists of jars, broken glass, and other house-f.c!d debris. This material suggests that the house was abandoned in the middic in nticth century. The fireplace and log crib suggest that the farmstead may have been tudt in the second half of the ninctcenth century possibly as carly as 1860.

(

nc.-ommendation: This group of associated structures should be mapped and detailed ,

.i.?.:ographs and drawings shotdd be made. Excavation of the well should be undertaken j to catablish an initial construction date. Removal of the surface vegetation is required i to iacate and define additional features and structural details.

It is situated approximately 500 feet northeast of the confluence of the Clinch River and Grassy Creek (35'54'23" north latitude, 84*23'05" west longitude).

(

Drscription: 'Ihc site consists of a single isolated rectangular log structure (Fig.12).

Yne stn:cture measures 10 by 15 feet and is constructed of large hand hewn logs fit:ed at the corners in half-dove-tail fashion. A partially collapsed peak, frame P^2f covers the structure. There is a single entry near the corner on one side, but 0m are no windows or fireplace. This suggests that the structure was utilized as a tturage facility rather than a dwelling. The size of the logs and the construction
