SUMMARY
OF h0VEMBER 24, 1981 TRIP TO OBSERVE UNDERPINNING OF STRUCTURES NEAR Pli1LADELPl!IA SUBWAY On November 24, 1931 the NRC staff visited the Philadelphia office of Hergentime/
Morrison - Knudsen Co., Inc. and J. F. White Contracting Co., along with repre-sentatives of Consumers Power Company and Bechtel. The purpose of this visit was to tour and discuss underpinning of several structures in connection with a sub-way construction job. Participants are listed in Enclosure 1.
l The subway construction job in Philadelphia is a cut-and-cover activity which includes 1700 feet of four-track reinforced concrete tunnel between Reading Terminal and Suburban Station. Of interest to the NRC is the fact that several najor buildings adjacent to or ever the subway tunnel are being underpinned by Mergertima Mergentime is also the contractor for the underpinning planned for the Auxiliary Building and the Feedwater Isolation Valve Pits at the Midland Plant. Units 1 and 2.
1 The tour included tht underpinning of the Essex Notel, the Penn Square Building, the Masonic Tenple and the City Itall Annex. The Essex Hotel underpinning.
l where needle beams support the vault, employed the pit nethod which is similar to the planned procedure at Midland. The load transfer method observed beneath the City Hall Annex is also similar to the plans at Midland.
