Binghan.-Willamette Company has manufactured and shi ged two
/
auxiliary feed-water pumps for installation at the Beav.er Va ne [
No. 2 Nuclear Station which may contain defective impell h e~ar rings.
These two assemblies were shipped to Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation on BWC Sales Order No.'s 230702/3.
BWC has detected an impeller wear ring cracking condition at the securring pin hole juncture on various impeller stages on a sister pump element assembly (pump 230701).
Pumps 230702/3 possibly have the same cracked condition.
Should this condition exist on these pumps, there is a potential for complete ring. failure and a loss if~ performance, although the pumps would continue to run for an indefinite period of time at the reduced performance.
BWC first obtained information pertaining to this defect on September 10, 1981, while pump 230701 was at Terry Steam Turbine and confirmed that information at our Portland facility on November 10, 1981.
BWC is currently evaluating other pumps that have shipped or are in process that may have the same condition.
This evaluation is expected to be complete by December 15, 1981.
As part of our corrective action, we have requested the 230702/3 pumps be returned to our Portland factory for the purpose of replacing the wear rings on all impellers.
We anticipate this action to be complete by December 31, 1981.
