Docket Nos.: STtt 50 454,.STri 50-455 and STH 50-456, STN 50-457-APPLICANT:. Conronwealth Edison Company FACILITY:

Byron and Braidwood Stations SUPJECT:

SUMMARY

OF ARIS RELIABILITY REVIEW !!EETING A reeting was -held November 17, 1981 in Bethesda, Maryland with representatives from Comonwealth Edison Company and their contractor, Torrey Pines Technology, to discuss the Byron /Braidwood auxiliary feedwater systen reliability analysis. The list of attendees is-included as Enclosure 1.

Representatives from Brookhaven National Laboratory, consultants to HRC, presented the results of their analysis of the AFWS reliability, using the applicant's data and fault trees. They found discrepancies in comparison with the applicant's analysis, with the failure probabilities for two transient cases:

1. ' loss of main feedwater (LOMF) and 2.

loss of nain feedwater/ loss of offsite power (L0t!F/ LOOP)

The discrepancy in the first case, L0iiF, resulted from the applicant including the availability of the start-up train C which the staff did not include. The staff asked for core details of the dependence of train C on the cain feedwater train before accepting the assumption of its availability on LO!'F.

The main concern of the staff was with the discrepancy in the LO"F/ LOOP

. The applicant failed to include the diesel generator failure case.

probability in calculating its revised figures for AFWS availability for this case. The staff required that a reasonable ~disel failure rate should be included. Also, the staff expressed an interest in additional infornation which the applicant agreed to supply, to support their clain that their present AFWS is sufficiently reliable in the event of loss of offsite power because of high grid reliability.
