STEAM GENERATOR TUBE LEAKS

';9, in

'g On November 30, 1981, the licensee determined that the "A" Once Throughi$ team Generator (OTSG) had 86 leaking tubes.

On November 21, 1981, thelicense'e'had,pl determined 27 leaking tubes on the "B" 0TSG, and subsequently found 11 additi nal tube leaks.

In order to further evaluate the leakage problem, eddy current testing is scheduled to commence on December 6,1981 and is planned to last several weeks.

Both.'0TSG's are being placed in full wet lay up until testing starts to minimize further tube degradation.

The primary coolant system is being maintained at atmospheric pressure.

The licensee is continuir g to investigate the mode of failure of the tubes and is planning to remove sections of failed tubes for metalurgical testing.

The impact of the tube failures on restart of TMI-l is not currently known by the licensee.

Media interest may occur because the licensee plans to issue a press release.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was infemed.

This preliminary not.ification is issued for information only and _the. NRC plans to continue' monitoring the licensee's corrective actions.

The Senior Resident Inspector (TMI-1) received notification of this occurrence by direct verbal report from~ the TMI-1 Plant Engineering Director at 7:30 PM,
