STAFF REQUIRE >ENTS - BRIEFING ON PRESSURIZED THERMAL SH0CK,1:35 PM, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1981, COMMIS-SIONERS' CGNFERENCE ROOM, D.C. OFFICE (OPEN TO PUBLIC ATTENDANCE)
The Comission was briefed by staff on the status of efforts to resolve the thermal shock issue.
Responses of eight licensees to letters requesting plant specific infonnation and the staff review of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory report on thermal shock were discussed.
The Commission indicated that a meeting with Owners Groups would be helpful in light of the technical disagreements between staff and.
industry on the threat posed to reactor pressure vessels from over-cooling transients. This will be held in conjunction with the next staff briefing on pressurized thermal shock, which will occur after the 150-day response period to the August 21, 1981, letters to eight licensees.

Chairman Palladino requested a list of all PWRs presently in the licen-sing pipeline for which pressurized thermal shock is not expected to pose a threat to vessel integrity.
The listing should include weld copper content and other factors affecting the RTNDT for each plant.
