Dear Friends:

Q 9

D Our purpose in writing to you centers in the serious responsibili gpj hay \\

been given to make recommendations relative to the possible re-open g-of the undamaged Unit One at the Three Mile Island nuclear power facility. As you wrestle with this decision we are sure that you have at your disposal a plethora of technical information which will have a bearing on how you view the situation. As representatives of the Christian community of York County we are convinced that there are other. issues, in addition to technical data, which ought rightly to be considered in your deliberations. Permit us to highlight several of these issues for you.

As Christians we understand the universe to have been created by God and en-trusted to the ongoing care of humanity. Thus we bear a great responsibility for the earth and must plan with a careful eye toward its preservation. The near disaster at TMI has made us aware of the ominous consequences for the earth should such an event occur again. As you ponder the safety of Unit One we urge you to think not only of short-term operational questions, but also of the long-term effects which the operation of this plant may have on the environment.

As Christians we also believe in the sanctity of life and the integrity of persons and to avoid those actions which reasonably might threaten the same.

Our concern ought not to be simply for the physical safety of each person, but for their emotional health and stability as well. Again, as you ponder your decision we hope that you will give farsighted consideration to this issue.

Wrapped up with these two issues is a third one.

Very often we seem to get the feeling that the American populace demands whatever is necessary to pro-vide the " good life" for ourselves. We know that it must be very tempting to you to base your decision on the ability to provide more electricity for people of our area at a cheaper cost. We are convinced that the central issue ought not be our own convenience or inconvenience.

Please be assured that we stand ready to accept changes in our style of living if such be dictated by consider-ation of the above issues or other information at your disposal.

Please understand that we are not urging you toward one conclusion or the

~

other as you consider the re-opening of Unit One.

We simply desire to raise for you some issues that we believe to be important and urge you to give them
