APPLICANTS' RESPONSES TO DR. FANKHAUSEk6S A DECd 793), R INTERROGATORIES TO APPLICANTS u.s. %, ,%, y hrssam i N

Interrogatory No. 1 -

Describe in functional terms all the monitoring equipment to be installed in or around the Zimmer Power Station (hereinafter Zimmer) which will record for.both the Applicants- and state and local governments or agencies any gaseous radioactive emissions or releases from Zimmer; and, with respect- to- each monitoring apparatus, include the following:

a. The types of radioactive isotopes to be monitored;
b. The monitoring range of each apparatus;
c. The location (s) and person (s) who will receive the monitoring information;
d. Whether it will be in continuous operation or will be triggered into operation upon the occurre :e of an event such as a radioactive release above a specified quantity.

Response

The types of radioisotopes to be monitored, the i monitoring range of each piece of apparatus, their location p'3 and persons who will receive the monitoring information are /

set forth on the attached table. This'instrumentati6n can

.be read out in the Zimmer. Station Control room at all times.

Moreover, as : described on page L.30.2-1 of the FSAR, other instrumentation continuously collects samples for later isotopic analysis in .the laboratory. In addition, 'the Applicants' Environmental Radiological Monitoring program is described in the affidavit of Greg C. Ficke attached to Appli cant's Motion for Summary Disposition Respecting Contention 2, dated November 24, 1981, which is incorporated herein by reference. The design of the ring monitoring system is described in the Ficke affidavit at 1913-15. Note that the detailed system design has not been completed and therefore the exact monitoring range has not yet been determined.

Interrogatory No. 2 With respect to the proceeding [ sic] answers, state whether there' will be and describe in functional terms devices to be used in conjunction with the monitoring equipment at or around Zimmer which would be able to chart the probable direction, velocity, dispersal rate and magnitude of radioactive releases into the atmosphere.

Describe how this information will be used and what persons will have direct access to it.

Response

The meteorological instrumentation described in Environmental Report S6.1.3.1.1 is used in conjunction with the radiation monitoring equipment described in response to Interrogatory 1 in order to predict the direction, velocity and dispersal rate of radioactive materials released into
