20555 Re: Union Electric (Callaway Plant, Unit 1)

Docket No. STN50-483-OL

Dear Sirs:

This is to formally announce for the Joint intervenors Coalition for the Environment, Missourians for Safe Energy, and Crawdad Alliance, the withdrawal of Contention Two, " Inadequate Environmental Protection from Radioactive Releases."

Joint Intervenors firmly believe in the merits of Contention Two, and Joint Intervenors know that the Callaway Plant, if put into operation, will routinely emit radioactive materials that will adversely affect the health and safety of the public.

This withdrawal is nteessary, however, because of Joint Intervenors' limited resources, in terms of both money and personnel, and because of the existing regulatory scheme within the NRC which discounts the effects of radicactivity.

Through the facts statsi in Contention Two and the discovery process, Joint intervenors have identified many of the bases for this Contention. This information, which among other things, contains references to over 60 separate papers, articles and books dealing with the hazards of radiation in general, and tritium in particular, has been provided by Joint Intervenors to the NRC, and is available for public inspection.

Joint Intervenors hope that the information they have made available will be considered by the appropriate persons within the NRC and members of the public.
