5) Serial 12010; dated May 29, 1981 This letter, as were the referenced letters, is an intenim 50 55(e) report concerning a potentially unsafe situation with respect to the tripping.of reactor coolant pumps during certain primary system high void fraction conditions.

The Midland hardware design, t provide an automatic safety-grade trip signal to all four reactor ecolant pumps when the reactor coolant pressure reaches a lov pressure setpoint (to be determined), has been finalized.

l Installation of the hardware required to implement this modification is scheduled for completion by the end of September,1982.

As d.iscussed in the previous letters (See Reference h), to require a RCP trip during any transient is not an optimal solution to the stated concern.

Consumers Power Company is continuing its participation in the BW Owner's Group p/ogram on Automatic RCP Trip. Two of the goals of this program are to:

(1) develop improved models for predicting post-small break LOCA O) conditions; and (2) develop criteria, based en plant conditions, for 5

determining if automatic RCP trip is required or if sufficient time exists

/

for operator manual actions. The projected completion date of the Owner's

//0

' Group program is June, 1982.
