SUBJECT:

Inspection of HPCI Steam Line

REFERENCE:

Immediate Action Letter of J. G. Keppler addressed to Cordell Reed of September 4, 19S1; Item 4

Dear Mr. Keppler:

In response to the above reference, we wish to inform you of the following measures taken and the resulting actions:

1.

Since September 4, 1981, daily surveillances were carried out on Units 2 and 3 HPCI lines. These surveillances were done by the Operating Department and the llPCI lines were always warm.

2.

Visual examinations were performed whenever the HPCI system was actuated or its isolation valves closed. No further hanger damage was observed.

3.

The subject of dropping the visual examinations per Item 2. was discussed at a meeting with your staff on October 23, 1981. As no new problems concerning the hangers were seen during these examinations, it was agreed that they could be terminated after written notification to Region III.

4.

During discussions with the Senior Resident Inspector, T. Tongue, we also requested that the operating surveillances be terminated.

Mr. Tongue conferred with your staff and then informed us that this surveillance could also be stopped after written notifica-tion.

By this letter, having satisfied the required criteria, we wish to formally notify that, as of the above date, both the visual examination and operating surveillances have been terminated.

Very t7uly yours,
