N/ f. se Our interest in submitting a petition to (th9ippited States Nuclear Regulatory Commission is as health care providers -

physicians , nurse practitioners, nutritionists, chiropractors, mental health workers, and administrators - caring for the spectrum of human life, from conception to death.

At a time when the necessity of preventive health care is so clear, we are deeply concerned about the potential environmental threat posed by the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant to women and men of childbearing age, fetuses, infants and children, and middle-aged and elderly adults. We see the licensing and subsequent operation of the Seabrook plant as having a negative impact on the physical and mental well-being of our clients.

Should the N.R.C. grant to the Public Service Company of New Hampshire its operating licenses for Units 1 and 2, at Seabrook, some effects to our professional lives are inevitable.

Among our general clientele, the anxiety - which is already l in evidence - caused by.our proximity to the plant site, will surely increase. One area where the effect of anxiety will surface in a profound way is in the counseling of adults who are deciding whether or not to conceive a child. Any fears concerning local he alth hazards that could increase the risk of birth defects will definitely influence a conscienticus adult's decision.

Diseases that are already the major causes of death and l

disability in the United States - heart disease and hypertension, cancer, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders - are all known to be aggravated by stress. Therefore, increases in these pathologies are very likely. Increases in depression, alcoholism, and even suicide may also be effected, 303 C

Beyond the inevitable effects lay possible effects to be felt through the local health care community. These are many. Increases in strictly. medic al pathologies could include: sterility, birth defects, leukemia, other cancers, even acute radiation sickness in the event of a major accident.

We , as that part of the community responsible for confronting the certain and possible health problems of our area, will have to meet the demands - cn physical resources and profes-sional training - that the above-cited effects from Seabrook's operation will place on us.

In the interest of continuing to give optimal health care to our clients, we feel compelled to intervene in the licensing of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant.
